First Lithuanian Space Snacks Presented in Panevėžys – An Innovation Developed in Collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA)
The first collection of Lithuanian space snacks was publicly unveiled in Panevėžys: freeze-dried snacks developed in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA). UAB Geld Baltic, the company behind the Super Garden brand, became the first company in Lithuania to implement a project of this scale and receive ESA funding.
During the event, Super Garden CEO Laura Kaziukonienė presented the final recipes approved by ESA on December 4 and shared the project's journey—from the initial concept to the present day, when the products are fully prepared for use in space missions.
According to Kaziukonienė, as Super Garden expanded its product portfolio, the company chose to incorporate innovative proteins, including the synthetic “super protein” lactoferrin. As a functional food ingredient, lactoferrin may help support immunity, maintain physiological balance, and promote healthy digestion—factors that are particularly important for astronauts whose bodies face the challenges of microgravity and stress in space.
The Super Garden team emphasizes that these snacks are not merely a solution for space nutrition. They are designed around the principles of complete and balanced nutrition, combining proteins, healthy fats, vitamins, fiber, and other essential nutrients in a freeze-dried format. This approach enables the development of products that could also support longer-duration missions, including future journeys to Mars.
During the event, participants not only learned about the project and the technological development process but also had a unique opportunity to taste the newly approved space snacks created according to the latest formulations.
This launch marks another important milestone in the history of Lithuanian food innovation and demonstrates that Europe is capable of developing food suitable not only for consumption on Earth but also for future astronaut missions in space.
